Acid Staining over Microtops
Acid Staining of commercial floors is very common and more and more new projects have acid stain specified before construction even starts, the reason it is so popular is because it provides a very attractive floor with minimal maintenance required at a cost that is well below comparable flooring products.
To acid stain commercial concrete floors requires knowledge and experience, this type of installation is expected to last a long time and perform as expected while being exposed to high traffic, chemicals and other contaminants. Especial attention should be given then to the floor preparation, proper substrate analysis and treatment is paramount to the success of the installation. The more porous a floor is, the better the stain will react and just as important, the better the sealer will bond to it.
Porous does not necessarily mean rough, a floor ground with 70 to 100 grit pads will feel smooth to the touch but will be very porous. When grinding, a very thin layer of concrete is removed and with it all impurities, stains, paints etc. Having a clean and porous surface will ensure that the stain will react better and more even and the sealer will have more to stick to.
Another thing to take into account when doing a commercial floor is which type of sealer to use. Most of the time stained floors are sealed with acrylics, solvent base and water base, but these coatings do not have the durability and chemical resistance of epoxies or polyurethanes, the project owner will want the best possible finish and longer lasting because once a business is open it is extremely difficult to shut down to redo the sealer if necessary. Choosing a high end sealer and do proper floor preparation will go a long way to ensure a successful installation
